Red Hook Residents Survey Flood Damage, Begin Cleanup (PHOTOS)

BROOKLYN, N.Y. -- In the end, the sandbags were no match for Sandy.

Red Hook resident Ethan Fugate, 41, and his girlfriend were eating dinner Monday night when they noticed that their residential street was flooding with water from nearby New York harbor. When the water topped the handlebars of the bicycle chained to a pole on the street outside, they began to reconsider their decision to ride out the storm.

"Our friends were begging us to come stay with them, but we have pets and had stocked up on food, so figured we were fine," he said.

Then the fireworks started -- transformers, all over the neighborhood, exploding like Roman Candles. "It was like the Fourth of July," Fugate said.

Fugate, like dozens of residents of this eclectic neighborhood in a corner of Brooklyn known for its do-it-yourself ethos, emerged from his home on Tuesday morning to survey the damage from Hurricane Sandy, the superstorm that pounded the East Coast yesterday and all last night. What they found was disheartening.

The floodwaters had receded from most streets, but one end of the main business strip, near the giant Fairway grocery store, was still submerged. The cobblestones on the side streets were slick with goo, left behind by retreating waters.

Wooden pallets, potted plants and giant wooden beams were left in yards and in the middle of streets, carried by the flowing water and then dropped when the water retreated. The sandbags that some homes and businesses had placed around basements and in front of doors were no more effective than a pebble in stopping the water from rushing in.

Enormous trees were uprooted. Cars that had begun to float last night were left abandoned in intersections. Power lines were down everywhere, but did not pose an immediate threat: the power was out and is likely to remain so for days to come.

Fugate and his girlfriend were fortunate: the water invaded the first floor of their two-family home, but they live on the top floor and stayed dry. Their less-fortunate downstairs neighbors, they think, left before the storm hit.

Jeremy and Maria Armstrong evacuated on Monday with their two children to higher ground in nearby Fort Greene, but were in constant contact with their next-door neighbors in Red Hook, who gave them updates on the water flooding the home they built a few years ago.

Anticipating the possibility of flooding, the Armstrongs had built the first floor of their house a few feet above ground level. But water nevertheless seeped in, pooling around the family piano. The most damage is likely in the garage, said Maria, who took a reporter on a tour.

"Our boiler, the hot water heater, all the electrical controls were underwater," she said.

Outside, her husband fired up a gas powered generator to begin pumping out the water.

On Van Brunt Street, the main business strip, Ron Kyle and his daughter Polly stood in the doorway of the wine and liquor store they opened three years ago and tried to figure out what to do next.

Like many business owners in the neighborhood, they live here, too. They have three feet of stinking water in their basement, Kyle said.

Here, in their store, cardboard boxes and bottles of booze lay strewn about the floor. The high-water mark was about four feet off the floor.

"We lost at least 150 cases," Kyle said. "Our inventory was floating around in sewage water. We didn't expect it would be this bad."

He estimates about $50,000 in lost inventory. The name of the store: Dry Dock.

"I get the irony of it," Kyle said.

The Flood Co Responds to Freeze Damage in Utah

How do you remove a broken bolt from an engine block?

tough one to answer without seeing the offending item.

However...

I'm assuming that it is just the head that has broken off, and the shaft of the bolt is still intact and sticking out of the block.

firstly give it a good dowsing in with a penetrating oil (something like WD40) because there is a reason why it broke in the first place, it's probably seized in the hole.

Now get a pair of Mole/Vice grips on it, locked on tight to the exposed shaft. Give it a bit of backwards and forwards wiggle as you are trying to "break" the seizure. Once it "cracks" it should come out with some gentle persuasion.

If the bolt has broken flush to the surface then you will have to drill down the centre and use a stud removal tool (it look a bit like an over sized drill bit with a reverse spiral on it to get it out.

If this fails then you wil have to gradually drill out the old bolt using slightly bigger drill bits each time until the old bolt collapses and falls out, then run a blind tap down the hole to clean the thread out.

Good luck!

State water plan more spin than real - Environment

DEP water plan more spin than real

Dear Editor:

Governor Christie cannot hide his dirty water record behind the NJ Department of Environment (DEP) announcement today to issue 25 permits to address combined sewer overflow (CSOs). The number of impaired waterways in New Jersey is growing at an alarming rate. Meanwhile the administration has been rewriting rules to protect water, rolling back county water quality management planning, and opposing legislation that would fund local CSOs cleanups. New Jersey is close to last in the nation in addressing CSO problems, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

New Jersey has had one of the worst records in the country when it comes to combined sewer overflows. Every time it rains, it pours raw sewage into our waterways and even into people's homes. EPA had allowed New Jersey for far too long to get away this problem, and now has finally stepped in and required these permits New Jersey has been ignoring for decades. This proposal right now is a drop in the bucket compared to what is needed. There needs to be billions of dollars in infrastructure improvements and that funding is not there. Until there are actually cleanup plans and funding in place, these are not permits, but rather permission to keep on polluting.

The Legislature has pushed for a bill that would allow the stormwater utilities established by the county, municipality, or local utilities authority to charge a fee for use of the stormwater management systems to create, maintain, improve, clean up, and fix stormwater management systems. Dilapidated storm water systems exacerbate the problem by increasing the water in combined sewers and this will help reduce the amount of water in sewers during major storm events. Christie has opposed this bill.

Funding from this bill would help clean up these discharges, where there currently is no funding. But the governor opposes the bill. We have exempted redevelopment projects across the state, but especially in urban areas, from addressing and fixing stormwater problems. We need to spend over $46 billion on fixing and upgrading our water infrastructure. Meanwhile the problems are getting worse. As long as our governor continues to weaken environmental protection and oppose funding mechanisms this is a nice press release but will not clean up waterways.

Combined sewer overflow undermines the revitalization of our cities and older towns because no one wants to invest in areas that are flooded with raw sewerage after heavy rains. This problem increases water treatment costs and causes many of our beaches and waterways to close. This funding will help prevent these discharges in the future.

Without utilities we do not have a funding mechanism to clean up combined sewer overflows which are a health hazard. This also hurts the ability of cities to revitalize themselves. According to recent studies, it would cost about $14 billion to clean up CSOs in New Jersey. We need this as a mechanism to do it.

The biggest source of pollution we face is nonpoint pollution and we need to retrofit our stormwater basins to protect our waterways. Cleaning up combined sewer overflows has many benefits. This will help revitalize our waterfront neighborhoods and communities as well as making our waterfronts more open to fishing and other recreational uses. Without funding, this program is a mirage. We need a mechanism to pay for it otherwise we will be waist deep in sewage every time it rains.

The Christie Administration has an ongoing record of weakening of clean water protections. The governor has basically gotten rid of the Drinking Water Quality Institute. The administration has not adopted standards for perchlorate and PFOA even though we have the science in place to adopt protections. They have downgraded and eviscerated the DEP Division of Science and have replaced it with the Science Advisory Board, which is primarily made up of polluters and corporate interests. The DEP is holding closed door meetings with polluters to rewrite and weaken the stormwater, flood hazard area, category one, and stream buffer regulations. The administration has delayed adoption of the Water Quality Management Plans. This delay has allowed the DEP to rewrite the rules to allow for more sewer service areas in environmentally sensitive areas and more pollution into our waterways. The DEP waiver rule would allow the commissioner to waive compliance with over 120 agency programs.

Over 40 years after the Clean Water Act was passed, New Jersey still has serious water polluting problems threatening not only our waterways, but drinking water as well. We are concerned that the Christie Administration's anti-environmental agenda will actually make water pollution in New Jersey worse. His administration has rolled back protection for C1 streams and stream buffers. They have allowed sewers into environment areas and for larger sewage package plants. They have weakened nutrient standards for discharge. The old saying is this glass half empty or half full? It doesn't really matter because given the Christie Administration, you do not want to drink what is in it anyway.

Destruction, And Restoration, Showcased In New DOE Images (PHOTOS)

By Jill Colvin, DNAinfo Reporter/Producer

NEW YORK CITY -- Hurricane Sandy ravaged public schools in low-lying areas across the city -- and new photos released by the Department of Education Tuesday show just how bad that damage was.

The images, released ahead of a City Council hearing examining the DOE's recovery after Sandy, show the stunning destruction wrought by the storm, which tossed pianos like toys around auditoriums, inundated boilers and electrical equipment with flood waters and left hallways blackened with mold.

The photos also show hallways of schools in Queens, Staten Island, Brooklyn and Manhattan strewn with debris -- and even a starfish left on a stove burner at P.S. 239 in Queens.

"Hurricane Sandy was an unprecedented and devastating event for our City," Schools Chancellor Dennis Walcott said in his prepared testimony to the council.

In addition to "severely" damaging 50 school buildings, the storm left many others without boilers, heat and phone lines, displacing nearly 75,000 students in 61 schools.

Most of the damage, officials said, was caused by flooding. Water rose as high as the first floor in some schools, and also damaged gym floors and athletic fields.

The winds and water also knocked over fuel tanks, leading to oil spills in seven buildings, which required hazardous materials response.

To help prevent future damage, the city in mulling changes, such as installing new doors and flood-guards, using more flood-resistant materials and re-locating boilers and electrical equipment to higher ground.

"While all of our schools are back in their home buildings, our work related to Hurricane Sandy is far from over," Walcott said.

What a week for Jeb Bush

What a week for Jeb Bush | TheHill

Who knew former Gov. Jeb Bush (R-Fla.) was not only ready to run for president (I wrongly predicted last month he would rather swallow glass than run, the way he had talked about it), but would be so prepared? This week was the Jeb "shock and awe" launch. His initial preparations, like quitting all his corporate boards and announcing an exploratory committee, were pretty convincing. But before anyone else has done the same, Bush has now gone even further, much sooner than expected. As a result, it has jolted the race, despite expectations he would eventually enter it.

ADVERTISEMENTFirst came his super-PAC, "Right to Rise," a name Bush borrowed with permission from Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.), and then he pledged to release a decade of personal tax returns, putting someone named Hillary Clinton in a sticky position, should she choose to run for her party's nomination and ultimately campaign against Bush in the general election. Recall how uncomfortable that made 2012 GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney, for example.

Bush has also dissed Clinton as someone from the past: "If someone wants to run a campaign about '90s nostalgia, its not going to be very successful." Bush even attempted a nuanced response to a gay marriage ruling in the Florida courts by saying the rule of law should be respected and "I hope that we can all show respect for the good people on all sides of the gay and lesbian marriage issue -- including couples making lifetime commitments to each other who are seeking greater legal protections and those of us who believe marriage is a sacrament and want to safeguard religious liberty."

Leaked plans to raise $100 million in his first quarter fundraising makes it more official than any candidate on either side.

It truly was quite a week for Bush. And it has given Clinton, any other Democrat who dares to challenge her, and the other nearly 30 possible presidential contenders in the GOP a lot to think about.

IS GOV. CHRIS CHRISTIE (R-N.J.) STILL IN THE GAME? SHOULD HE RUN FOR PRESIDENT? AskAB returns Tuesday, Jan. 13. Please join my weekly video Q&A by sending your questions and comments to askab@thehill.com. Thank you and Happy New Year!

Duggar Laundry Soap Recipe

The Duggar family is famous for many things, and one of them is their Duggar laundry soap recipe.

With 19 kids, and a commitment to lead a debt free life, the Duggars have had to figure out how to make the most of the money they have.

One of the ways they do this is by making their own homemade laundry soap, instead of buying a commercial product.

On the Duggar's website they provide two recipes for their laundry soap, one a liquid and the other a powder.

The ingredients for both the liquid and powdered laundry detergent recipe include:

You can check out the website for full directions, but with just these few ingredients they make 10 gallons of liquid laundry detergent!

With those 10 gallons they say they can do either 180 loads of laundry for a top loading washing machine, or 640 loads in a front loading washing machine when they make it into a liquid, which appears to stretch it even farther than when they leave it powdered.

Here's the recipe for the liquid version, and here's the powder detergent recipe.

The say each batch costs $2, meaning they do between 180-640 loads of laundry for $2.

Wow! That is a cost savings!

I can see why the Duggars, and frankly anyone, might consider making their own laundry detergent when you can save this much money.

So, do you make your own laundry detergent? If so, you can share your homemade laundry soap recipe here, or see even more recipes already submitted.

In addition, you can read homemade laundry detergent recipes I recommend here.

Taylor says: Here are links to buy this or related products. If you make a purchase I receive a small commission which helps support this site and my family.

Palmolive Sponge Fresh Dish Soap Reviews & Experiences

Palmolive Dish & Sponge Fresh Dish Liquid Review

by Taylor

I've gotten lots of comments recently from readers about Dawn dish soap causing smelly sponges and dishrags so when I saw this Palmolive version in the store recently, designed to keep your sponges fresh smelling, I just knew I needed to give it a try for everyone.

Stinky sponges can be a big problem, and there are some ways to combat it like always wringing out your sponge thoroughly after each wash to let it air dry, and also cleaning your sponges regularly.

However, if you've ever picked up a nasty smelling sponge you know it can be gross. Real gross. The smell gets all over your hands and won't go away, plus who wants to wash dishes with that, and smear who knows what all over your supposedly clean dishes?

I think Palmolive saw a need here and tried to fill it.

I will confess that I don't really suffer too much from stinky sponges myself, doing the things I mentioned above regularly to combat the problem. However, my (wonderful) husband doesn't always remember to wring out the sponge and often leaves it laying at the bottom of the sink to stay nice and moist, the perfect breeding ground for odors (and germs).

That's why I gave him the job of testing out this dish liquid and reporting how it worked for him. What follows is his opinions about the product, which I've summarized and added.

First, in regard to the smell, he liked it, it smelled kind of sweet or like candy, although not an identifiable scent. It was not too strong, and not unpleasant.

Next, in regard to washing dishes it appears to work as well as other Palmolive products for cleaning and removing grease and food particles from pots, pans and dishes.

Finally, and most importantly how does it work to prevent stinky sponges? Pretty well, actually. Although he left the sponge wet and sometimes even with unrinsed food particles on it it didn't have that stink to it that it would most likely have developed otherwise.

I (Taylor) am still personally squicked out by this though, since even though you can't necessarily smell the yuckies in the sponge with this stuff, I don't know that they're not there!

So I will now resume dishwashing duty more regularly, and keep my sponge rinse out and then dried out regularly, as well as cleaning it periodically to clean and sanitize it.

The bottom line, however, is that if you suffer from stinky smelly sponges and it makes dishwashing unpleasant for you, this may be a good soap for you to try. It seems to work well for dish cleaning and if it gets rid of an offensive odor at the same time, it seems like a win-win.

Has anyone else used this product? If so, I'd love to hear what you thought of it as well. You can share your review here of this or any other brand or type, telling me how it worked for you.

I Actually Thought It Made My Sponges Smell Worse!

by Stacey

I like using the soap filled dish wands with replaceable sponge heads.

I learned long ago sponges have to be kept in a dry place when not in use, no matter what soap you use or they'll get grosser faster.

I have personally never had that problem with any of the Dawns...yet.

I will at time use Palmolive but one of them that I found was nasty from the get go was the one they specifically advertise for sponge odor. Lol, kind of ironic.

It smelled like beer while using it and then all my brand new sponges STUNK AWFUL!

Love It But Hard To Find In Stores These Days

by Sparkle

(Bayonne, NJ)

Sparkle says:

I love this product. It is the only dish detergent that doesn't make the sponge or dishcloth smell.

The only thing is that I can't find it in any store. That includes Shop Rite, Stop & Shop, etc.

Where can I find it?

This is the only dish wash detergent I will use.

I recently bought the new one called Dish & Sink. It smells nice but my sponge and dishcloth smell horrible after one day.

Believe me, I clean the sponge, etc. all the time. Tell me how I can get this Dish & Sponge Fresh.

Taylor says:

I hadn't realized it until you sent in this review Sparkle, but it appears this product has been discontinued.

As you say, now Palmolive has a new Dish + Sink soap, but it isn't designed to deal with stinky sponges, but instead stinky dish drains so it is unsurprising that it doesn't work as well for your sponges as the previous variety.

That stinks, literally in this instance!

Ah well, such is life! They discontinue products all the time. Nothing we can do. So tell me in the comments which soaps you use that you find don't make your sponges stink so quickly, so those that had been using this variety can switch to something else.

You can also share your dish soap review here for this brand, or another, and I'll add it to the site.

FedEx, UPS make plans for a better holiday season

FedEx, UPS make plans for a better holiday season - Yahoo News

DALLAS (AP) -- Facing an even bigger mountain of packages this holiday season, FedEx and UPS are hiring more workers to avoid the delays that frustrated shoppers and gift-recipients a year ago.

Last December, the delivery giants were caught off-guard by bad weather and a surge in last-minute online shopping. An estimated 2 million packages were late at Christmas.

On Wednesday, FedEx Corp. said it expects deliveries between Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve to rise 8.8 percent over last year, to 290 million shipments. Volume is expected to surge on each of the first three Mondays in December, with FedEx predicting a peak of 22.6 million shipments on Monday, Dec. 15.

The delivery companies and Internet retailers are benefiting from a strengthening economy and optimism about consumer spending. At the same time, they're dealing with consumers who increasingly enjoy the ease of shopping on computers and mobile devices but expect the goods to show up almost as quickly as if they had shopped at a store. That expectation is often fed by online retailers, who hold out the promise of free delivery until right before Christmas.

About 1.3 million express packages handled by UPS and 618,000 carried by FedEx failed to get delivered on time last Christmas Eve, according to ShipMatrix Inc., which makes software for shipment tracking. The firm's president, Satish Jindel, said UPS and FedEx were at fault only 30 percent of the time.

In most cases, retailers promised guaranteed express delivery but tried to save money and didn't pay the delivery companies for that speedier service, Jindel said.

The merchants face tough competition for consumers who base purchases first on price, and second on free shipping, and the faster the better.

"Every single year the percentage of retailers offering free shipping goes up," said Vicki Cantrell, senior vice president at the National Retail Federation. "The consumer expects it. The retailer may or may not be able to afford it."

Target Corp. has started offering free holiday shipping for any item on its website, a first for the retailer as it tries to compete better against online rivals such as Amazon.com Inc. The timing of the offer was stunning -- weeks before the unofficial kickoff of holiday shopping.

Cantrell said Target, Wal-Mart Stores Inc. and other retailers are getting better at the shipping game. They will ship items from stores instead of a central warehouse if that is faster, or tell online customers when the product they want can be picked up at a store near their home. Those strategies could relieve pressure on the delivery companies and satisfy the shopper more quickly.

The retail federation's online division, Shop.org, predicts that online sales in November and December will rise 8 to 11 percent over last year. To meet that demand, online retailers such as Amazon and the delivery companies are hiring more.

FedEx plans to hire 50,000 seasonal workers, up from 40,000 last year. United Parcel Service Inc. says it will add up to 95,000 people, up from 85,000. Last year, both companies wound up scrambling to hire more seasonal employees than they had planned, which increased costs and cut into profits.

FedEx also expects to invest $1.2 billion in its ground-shipping network in its current fiscal year, with most of that going to increase capacity and automation. The company said that the improvements have sped up ground delivery by a day or more in more than two-thirds of the U.S.

UPS has also invested to boost shipping capacity during the holidays, said the company's chief commercial officer, Alan Gershenhorn. He said that UPS had improved it forecasting and package tracking. UPS has not issued a holiday forecast.

Shares of FedEx fell $1.41 to $158.47; UPS shares fell $1.69 to $99.06.

Baby Formula Stain & Spit Up Removal Tips

Tips For Baby Formula Stain And Spit Up Removal

by Taylor

Below I've gathered several tips from readers, as well as a video from the web, which share spit up and baby formula stain removal instructions and tricks.

The key with these stains is to treat them as quickly as possible, whenever you can, because they can set quickly and also, especially in the heat, can smell sour and nasty quite soon.

The longer they dry onto the clothing, the more difficult they are to remove. Therefore, below you'll find some tips for neutralizing the spit up, which contains some stomach acid generally, to keep it from causing as much damage to the clothing before it can get washed away.

Further, some people differentiate between washing these stains from the baby's clothes versus adult clothes.

I personally don't think there is much of a difference, and have always treated my clothing and those of my kids in the same manner, but if you want to use products specifically designed for babies for their clothing you can.

There are always lots of ways to remove spit up and formula, so I don't claim I've gathered all the possible ways to do it. Therefore, if you've got another way that works for you I'd love it if you shared it with me here.

Further, the tips below focus on removing formula and spit up stains from clothing and other washable fabrics, such as bibs and burp cloths, but as you may know babies don't just spit up onto washable stuff. Instead, they also make a mess on upholstery and carpet. If you're searching for information for these surfaces make sure to check my article about removing formula stains.

I Always Take A Bar Of Fels Along When We Travel

by SR101 Reader

SR101 Reader says:

Fels Naptha is a great pre-treater to have in the laundry room, but I have found that when traveling with a baby that it is very helpful to rinse out formula spit ups with cold water as soon as possible and apply the Fels, then rinse it out 5 to 10 minutes later.

This way when you are able to do laundry when you return home you have little or no stain to deal with.

Otherwise I have a lot of pre-soaking (and line drying) to deal with when I return, both on his shirts as well as mine!

I have also had good luck removing blood stains with Fels.

This product is well worth the price I pay for it.

Taylor says:

Thanks for sharing that tip!

I've collected a bunch of uses for Fels Naptha soap here if you're interested in even more ways to use this laundry soap bar.

In addition, you can read more tips for how to remove blood stains here, or share your own.

Further, since I got this tip another reader, Nancy, shared she had been following the advice and here's what she thought of it.

Nancy's Response To This Advice:

We recently took a long weekend trip with the baby and I packed a bar of Fels.

While I would like to forget about laundry for at least a few days, having the Fels with me really cut down on the time I would have spent on this constant task when we returned.

Rinsing out those formula stains and applying the Fels allowed me to just throw the clothes in the wash when we got home.

If it were not for the laundry bar I would have had to run 3 different soaks, one for his clothes, one for my tops, and another for my robe!

BTW for soaking clothes, I really have found the BIZ powder to be the most helpful.

I Pretreat Formula Stains With Dishwashing Liquid

by Liz

Liz says:

I had already been using the 20 Mule Team Borax for soaking baby clothes (and mine), but when I saw your tip about pre treating formula stains with dish washing liquid I tried it, and it is really helpful.

Before I put the clothes in to soak I apply dish washing liquid, leave it on for about 15 minutes, rinse with cold water, and then apply a little more, rub in, and drop the garment into a soak bucket.

I use the same process for my tops because I get a lot of the same stains on them as well, just use a separate soak bucket.

When I am ready to wash a load, I just dump the bucket of clothes into the washer and add detergent.

Pretreating and soaking stained clothes makes a world of difference in the cleaning results, and saves time and money.

Of course I try to apply the dishwashing liquid to the stains as soon as possible, what a difference the timing makes.

Though it is not always possible, the other catch all here is that it is best to air dry all of the garments that you know were stained, just in case the stain was not totally removed in the wash.

Otherwise you can end up with clothes that you can only wear at home, believe me I have some of those.

Taylor says:

Thanks for sharing this Liz. Everyone's got dish soap at home, so this can really help some new Moms with these pesky spots.

You can use dishwashing liquid for lots of cleaning and stain removal uses. Here's some more dish soap uses here, or share your own!

The Sun Plus Lemon Juice Is How I Deal With These Tough Stains

by Mary

I use the power of the sun to remove extremely tough (old) formula stains from white clothing.

Once I have done my normal soaking and washing of these garments and there are any stains remaining, I will apply a liberal dose of lemon juice and let them dry in the sun. It works every time as a natural bleaching effect.

Baby Formula Stain Removal From Clothes - With Video

Here's a video showing several alternate tips for baby formula stain removal from clothing.

In this video, instead of using liquid enzyme laundry detergent or a stain pretreater, as suggested in my article on removing formula stains, this video suggests using unseasoned meat tenderizer instead.

Basically, the premise is the same -- both the meat tenderizer and the laundry detergent or laundry pretreater contain enzymes, which help break down the formula stain, which is made of protein, mainly.

I guess the theory in suggesting meat tenderizer is that you can use items that will be in your pantry to remove the stain.

Taylor says: Here are links to buy this or related products. If you make a purchase I receive a small commission which helps support this site and my family.

Unfortunately for me, I would have to go out and buy meat tenderizer at the store before I could use this stain removal method, where as I already have both a laundry pretreater and laundry detergent sitting in my laundry room.

However, this gives you an alternative way of removing these stains, for those of you who do keep meat tenderizer handy.

Further, I do like how this video suggests some additional methods for formula stain removal.

First, it suggests that if you catch the stain fast enough you may just be able to wipe it away with a baby wipe. Those are generally pretty handy if you are dealing with formula stains -- so I like this tip. (Click the link if you'd like to read more uses for baby wipe around your home, or to share your own.)

Finally, it suggests using undiluted lemon juice if the stain is on a white item, which can then be laid out in the sun (see the tip above for more details on that).

***Update: An SR101 reader wrote in to share this thought about the video with me. She said:

I agree with the video that you should use sunshine to help remove these stains.

I do this all the time for bibs and shirts that get spit up stains on them.

Baby Spit Up Stain Removal Tip

by Taylor

Baby spit up is generally acidic, since it came from your baby's stomach.

These stains can yellow quickly. To stop the acid in the spit up from yellowing your baby's clothes you need to neutralize it.

Taylor says: Here are links to buy this or related products. If you make a purchase I receive a small commission which helps support this site and my family.

The easiest way to do this is sprinkle baking soda onto the spit up, and then wash as soon as possible.

If you do these steps many pieces of clothing and also your spit cloths can be saved from yellowing.

Of course, if you get out baby clothes from storage and see a yellow stain that you don't think was there before, it is not necessarily a yellow stain from the acid in the spit up, which got washed away in the wash.

Instead, it is most like oxidized proteins from the spit up, from either formula or breast milk.

Here is another reader tip for removing yellow stains from old baby clothes, which should help.

So, do you have any tips for how to use baking soda around your home? If so, you can share your baking soda uses here, or read others already submitted.

Dishwashing Liquid + Oxi Clean Powder Works For Me!

by Joan

I also pretreat formula stains with dishwashing liquid just as Liz indicated.

The dishwashing liquid really breaks up these stains.

I have also used it on greasy food stains.

I do a lot of presoaking with the Oxi Clean Powder, of course the version that is free of perfumes and dyes.

Unless you are able to wash these stained clothes right away presoaking is the best method.

An ongoing soak bucket is the most economical and efficient way to handle these constant stains, both on the baby's clothes as well as ours.

I also use a separate soak bucket for the adult clothes.

I Use Fels, Zout & 20 Mule Team Borax For Baby's Messes

by Heidi P.

Heidi says:

I have used Fels for several years, mainly to pretreat shirt collars and other occasional stains.

Of course after my son was born laundry became a whole new process.

I contacted the company that produces Fels and asked for advice regarding my new laundry problems, i.e. formula and baby food stains.

They recommended Zout as a pretreater and also 20 Mule Team Borax as a presoaker and general laundry booster.

I now use all three of these products depending on the severity of the stains and how fast I can tackle them.

I really like soaking with the Borax and also adding it to the wash as a booster.

The Zout is a very good pretreater for small stains, including formula and fruit juice.

Of course I will never give up on my Fels, especially since it is effective and inexpensive.

I keep a bar of Fels at work, as well as an extra shirt, since my son will occasionally perform a delayed spit up on me between the time I leave the house and drop him off at the day care.

It is amazing what a difference it makes to rinse out a spit up stain right away, rather than to have it sit for several hours!

How To Handle Fresh & Old Baby Formula Stains

by SR101 Reader

An SR101 reader shared with me how she removes these stains, depending on how old they are. Instead of using home remedies she uses specific products, which she recommends.

SR101 Reader says:

For same day treatment of baby formula stains:

1) Apply a cold water paste of baking soda to the stain and let sit for 15-30 minutes. This will neutralize the stain and help eliminate sour odors.

2) Rinse, and apply Shout Gel pretreater rubbing the Shout into the stain using the applicator brush.

3) Launder with Dreft detergent.

For stains more than 1 day old or where there are multiple stains, i.e. baby food and formula:

Pre-soak with Clorox 2 powder noting the appropriate soak times for white versus colored garments. Rinse thoroughly.

Then apply Shout Gel if needed.

Leave the garment sit for about 10 minutes. Finally, launder with Dreft detergent.

For formula stains on adult clothing (a common event) apply the same rules as above. You may want to substitute another enzyme detergent such as Tide or Wisk since they tend to be more economical than Dreft.

Taylor says:

Thanks so much for sharing what products and method you use for treating these stains.

I'd love to hear from even more people sharing what products they use too, be they baby laundry products, or more general supplies designed for everyone to use.

You can share your laundry stain remover reviews here, or read other opinions and experiences that have already been submitted by other readers.

How I Deal With Formula Stains That Happen At Home

by SR101 Reader

For baby formula stains that occur at home I will rinse them right away with cold water.

Then apply dishwashing detergent to the stain leaving it on for about 15 minutes before rinsing.

Next I will apply the Shout Gel pretreater and throw it in the hamper for the next wash. Of course it does not take long to accumulate a load of wash, but the Shout can be left on up to a week.

The only time I have not done a load of baby clothes in a day is when the washer broke down! Most of the time I need to follow these steps for 2 shirts, the baby's and mine.

When I run the baby's wash I use Dreft liquid and always add about a 1/2 cup of baking soda to the load.

If I am unable to handle these stains immediately I presoak them with Biz powder over night before washing with Biz and Dreft. Biz really knocks out set in stains.

Taylor says:

Thanks for sharing all these great ways for removing these baby stains.

I noted that you use dishwasher detergent to remove the stains. You may not be surprised, but many readers may be, that this cleaning supply actually has lots of other cleaning and stain removal uses. In fact, I've collected quite a few of them at the link, so if you're interested read the article to see how else you can use dishwasher detergent for stain removal. In addition, if you know of a use yourself please share it as well!

I Tried The Approach Suggested Above And It Helped

by Sharon

Sharon sent me this note saying she had used the advice from the SR101 reader above, regarding dealing with formula stains that happen at home.

Sharon says:

I am always looking for ways to cut down the amount of time I spend on laundry.

Sometimes I think my laundry hampers are bottomless pits, as my washer runs almost as much as my refrigerator!

I recently tried your approach in removing formula spit ups and it really helped.

I was already using Shout Gel, but the use of dishwashing liquid was news to me. There must be something in it that neutralizes the stain.

I know that dishwashing liquid can be helpful in removing greasy type stains on clothing but never thought of using it on formula.

I have a friend that uses it on shirt collars as it can help in removing make up stains.

I now keep a bottle of dishwashing liquid in the baby's room as well as the laundry room.

BTW I read through all of the tips and note that I also like the Biz product.

Baby Stains - A Tip From A New Mom

Monica from Desperately Seeking Coffee has a great suggestion for baby food stains that works for her, and I think will also work for you.

She keeps her favorite laundry stain remover right next to the hamper where she puts her baby's clothes once they've been worn.

That is a wonderful idea, because the quicker you can put a stain remover on the stain, the easier it will come out in the wash.

And babies, as any parent knows, have a tendency to make a mess on the majority of their clothes.

I have even found that babies can make a mess in places you don't normally even look. For example, once I didn't notice my child's sock had a big splotch of, I think, strained carrots on it, and put it through the washer and dryer without pre-treating.

It was basically ruined because I had set the stain in the dryer, but who would have ever thought to look on a sock for a food splatter? Not me, the new mom, but now I know better!

I'd love to hear even more tips from you, sharing your tips for removing baby stains of all varieties. You can share your tip here.

In addition, you can read my tricks and ideas for removing the top types of baby stains.

Oil spill in China is huge threat to marine life and water supply

There is another oil disaster out there, besides just the BP spill in the gulf. There was a large spill in China five days ago and it has been growing steadily as cleanup efforts are underway. One man who was on the cleanup crew was drowned and when found he was covered in oil.

China does not have as much technonology as the US for oil spills it seems since cleanup crews have been left with nothing more than plastic gloves and straw mats. "We don't have proper oil cleanup materials, so our workers are wearing rubber gloves and using chopsticks," said an official who was not named.

The spill started when a pipeline at a Northeastern Chinese port exploded, flooding the sea with oil. It has spread to over 165 miles in the past five days. The beaches are black and cover in a thick coat of oil. It seems as though the spill in China is worse as far as beaches go. They are completely covered.

The spill is also a huge threat to sea life and water quality. It's estimated that about 1,500 gallons have spilled which seems like nothing compared to the millions that have leaked into the gulf. However, the little bit that has leaked seems to be doing just as much damage, especially near the shoreline.

It seems like oil related disasters are more and more frequent lately and it's a sad thing not only for economies but also for wildlife as well. Many species just may not make it through the spill and that is a really depressing fact to think about.

In this first episode of the Phantom Screens Southern Romance Project, company CEO Esther de Wolde, goes house hunting in Mobile Alabama where she finds and buys a 1906 home in the Oakleigh Garden Historic District with the help of Realtor Chris King and home improvement expert Danny Lipford.

We want to hear from you! In addition to posting comments on articles and videos, you can also send your comments and questions to us on our contact page or at (800) 946-4420. While we can't answer them all, we may use your question on our Today's Homeowner radio or TV show, or online at todayshomeowner.com.

Esther de Wolde: So we ought to start with introductions. I’m Esther de Wolde, and I’m CEO of Phantom Screens. I’m one of the people who founded our company 20-odd years ago in Abbotsford, British Columbia in Canada.

You may well be wondering, “What in the world is a Canadian doing in Alabama anyways?” Truth is, I fell in love with the South many years ago—more years ago than I care to remember. The porches; the wide, oak-lined streets—it’s just a wonderful part of the world. And the people, the people are so friendly.

I had my dream. It was bucket list item number 67: to take a neglected Southern home and restore it to its former glory. To make a long story short, I reached out to my friend and corporate spokesperson, Danny Lipford, to see if I could make this dream come true. So here’s my story, the story of my Southern romance.

Esther de Wolde: It all started with just the crazy desire, passion, whatever you want to call it, to one day restore a home. And I have this fascination with old homes. The old architecture just draws me in. I’m forever tripping when I’m walking on sidewalks, cause I’m staring at the houses.

And so it’s one of those things when you have an item on your bucket list, and I guess you just keep dreaming about it. And I find with myself, if I dream about it long enough, I’ll find a way. I guess that’s the fun of dreaming, right? If you dream about it, you actually make a way to make it happen.

Like a street like this, this is perfect—picture perfect. I wanted the sidewalk, and then a strip of lawn, and lined with these gorgeous oak trees that drape over the street. I mean that’s just amazing. And every house here has that kind of Southern character I was looking for.

So what do you call this historical area again?

Chris King: This is the Oakleigh Garden District.

Esther de Wolde: OK.

Chris King: Most of these were built in the early 1900s.

Esther de Wolde: That first day when we went out and started looking at houses, we had lined up, I think it was six houses to come see. And I had a wish list ahead of time—it had to have two stories, a beautiful yard or at least potential of a yard for gardening for sure. And no stucco—that was a for sure—and high ceilings was another one.

And so when we began looking at these houses, some of the exteriors matched just perfectly—just love them—and then you’d go inside and you’d find out, oh, it only has a eight-foot ceiling. The upstairs might have 12 feet or something, but it just didn’t suit.

And then we’d go on to the next one. We’d pull up and have a beautiful floor plan inside, but it would be stucco. And I could not get around stucco, there is no way my brain could go there.

Chris King: Hey, Esther, this is probably the last house we’ll see today. And this isn’t currently on the market, but it is a true diamond in the rough. And you keep saying you want something from the deep South and a diamond in the rough, 257 Rapier might be it. This is a great, classic cottage for Mobile.

Danny Lipford: And this was what? What year is this?

Chris King: 1906.

Danny Lipford: 1906.

Chris King: And it’s owned by one family for decades. And I know you originally said you wanted the history—that you would like to find as close to the original owner as you can—and this has been in their family since I think the 20s.

Danny Lipford: Well, you wanted a nice Southern feel to a home, let’s check out the porch up here.

Esther de Wolde: Wow, look at this porch! You don’t have these in Canada.

Chris King: I’m telling you, this is another living room here.

Esther de Wolde: This is the biggest porch we’ve seen, from every house for sure.

Danny Lipford: Yeah, it’s pretty nice, though. I like the way it indents here, and the angles there. I don’t know, when you walk up to a house—especially a Southern home—you want to feel welcome. And it’s got a pretty cool little feeling right here.

Esther de Wolde: This one screams welcome.

Danny Lipford: And then the…. It’s funny, as simplistic as this house is, then you have some decorative elements, like the corbels up there.

Chris King: And that’s probably original stained glass above the front door.

Danny Lipford: Yeah, I would think so.

Chris King: Well, do ya’ll want to take a look at the inside?

Esther de Wolde: Sounds good to me.

Chris King: All right, as I told you, Esther, this was built in the early 1900s, and this is pretty close to original. You can see the plaster walls, and it is a true fixer-upper—a diamond in the rough.

Esther de Wolde: How tall did you say the ceilings were?

Chris King: About 11 feet.

Esther de Wolde: Man, it makes it look so grand.

Danny Lipford: Well, this is a good feel, though, I mean the original, this has to be the original molding included. It kind of has more of an, I don’t know, an upper scale look to it than you would think from the outside, because you would think these trim would be all smooth.

Esther de Wolde: Absolutely.

Chris King: You notice the transoms throughout the hallway for central hall for creating air flow.

Danny Lipford: Yeah, I love the whole dog run.

Esther de Wolde: Oh, and the double French and the dog run I wanted. It’s just gorgeous.

Chris King: This is a three bedroom, one bath. Your formal living area, dining room originally. Looks like original fireplaces.

Danny Lipford: Now, that’s a statement, isn’t it!

Chris King: Isn’t it.

Esther de Wolde: Wow, gorgeous.

Chris King: This house is really nice. And you’ve got these pocket doors, which everybody loves pocket doors. And they’re usually a little hard to open, so you’ll have to get Mr. Lipford there to fix that.

Danny Lipford: Yeah, I can fix that.

Esther de Wolde: No problem.

Chris King: You like that?

Danny Lipford: Easy, easy.

Chris King: The floor furnace would have been a source of heat at one time. In today’s time we wouldn’t have installed it there.

Danny Lipford: That has to go.

Esther de Wolde: Really? You can’t keep that for quaintness?

Danny Lipford: You can, but we have a different word for it down here. It’s kind of redneck. No, that has to go. There probably, if you decide to buy the house and depending on what you want to do on renovation, there’s bound to be a place where we can get a few of the original boards out of some of the other areas, lace them in here.

Chris King: And you weave them, and you won’t ever know it’s there.

Danny Lipford: OK, I see you looking at the antiques, quit looking.

Esther de Wolde: I know, I’m wondering what’s under here.

Chris King: They’re not for sale, just the house.

Esther de Wolde: So we meet Mr. Ford at the lawyer’s office. He was just telling his stories as Mr. Ford does, and they’re pretty funny. At one point he’s going on with his story, and he says, “Yeah, my Daddy always said, you can’t trust an Englishman or a woman.” And I think at that point he realizes Richard, my coworker, is from England; and I’m buying the house and I’m a woman. And he’s like, “But I’m sure you two are fine.”

And as we’re going through all the legal documents, suddenly thunder starts outside and lightning, and it begins to rain. And we’re from Vancouver of all things, where the rain rains; but I don’t know the last time I’ve ever heard rain pound that hard on a roof. We couldn’t even barely hear ourselves talk. And of course we’re making jokes about who’s going to get struck by lightning for saying the wrong thing.

It turned out to be this jovial afternoon in this lawyer’s office and one of those where you emerged from it and went, did that really just happen? First of all I just bought a house in Mobile, Alabama, and met the lawyer from the Andy Griffith show. It was just crazy. It was an awesome time and really enjoyed it and left the office a house owner.

Danny Lipford: Well, I’ll tell you what, the weather’s a lot different than it is in Vancouver. What do you think about it?

Esther de Wolde: Oh, I’m telling you I don’t mind the heat. I love the heat. But, oh, the mosquitoes. They make me madder than a wet hen!

I want to save one wall. I mean this wall here—pristine condition. Right?

Danny Lipford: Pristine, huh?

Esther de Wolde: Don’t touch that!

Danny Lipford: Oh, scared me.

Esther de Wolde: Thanks so much for watching. If you’d like to know more about the project, please visit us at ExperiencePhantom.com or follow us on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and my blog.

Restoration company for home repairs, water damage?

A restoration company's job is to restore property if possible.

When I had a house fire in 1995, the major damages were from smoke and the insides of my house was cut out to the basics.

They took all of our furniture, appliances, clothing etc and took it to a special warehouse, where they used some kind of machine or chemical that could "draw" out the smoke. By doing this, they saved about 25% of our stuff and we got back. Now some things were not done, since they knew nothing would ever get out the smoke.

What most likely will happen is that they would come in there and use these huge fans that are really power-full and try to dry up the water/moisture. They may have to remove the paneling also.

I suggest you call up one up and see if they can give you an estimate of the costs and also get one from your handyman. But you will need to do asap, since the longer you go and get mold, at some point, you will never ever get the mold out.

good luck

Remove Mold from Floors – Remove Moulds from Wall – Household Mold Cleanup and Remediation

Since molds and mildew are toxic, it's sometimes necessary to use disinfectants to wash kill molds. The following disinfectants are used.

Pray that it works for you.

8. How to Remove Molds from Furniture - Use Denatured Alcohol

Denatured alcohol - use one cup of denatured alcohol to one cup of water and wash the surface with the mixture. This should be used to clean molds from furniture after which the furniture should be dried thoroughly. Remember that furniture or wood can curve outward and crack if introduced to water and dried very fast. Because some furniture can be very valuable and expensive, just try washing it three to for times with inexpensive clear oil, then dry until all the molds and mildew is gone forever.

Birmingham Water Extraction and Sewage Cleanup Companies by Leo Nov

The residents of Birmingham are considered fortunate because they live in a city that has a lot of economic opportunities. Credited as the largest city in Alabama, a state of the United States, it is also home to a robust economy that ranges from metal production to other business such as banking and medicine. The result is a successful condition that merits them as one of the most rapidly improving economic locations in the United States.

But this rapid incline is not without its disadvantages in that it can affect Birmingham's ability to deal with flood damage. Contrary to popular belief, flooding does not just occur because of natural disasters such as hurricane. More often than not, these home emergencies are due to obstructions in the system of pipes used by the city of Birmingham. A city that holds a large population increases its chances to sustain damage because increased use translates to the greater probability of wear and tear. Also, with such a large market such as Birmingham, commercial establishments have sprouted that add to the production of industrial wastes. Debris, oil, and other substances can collect in the pipes and prevent the water from flowing smoothly and thus cause flooding in some properties.

Fortunately for those in Birmingham, the city is aware of the danger of flooding and has taken the necessary steps to prevent it from happening in the first place. One of the most strictly enforced stipulations in the Birmingham City Code is the criminalization of the garbage dumping in water bodies. It does not matter if it occurs in a private or public property because the punishment of criminal littering is applicable in both instances. In addition to this, there is also the Birmingham Department of Public Works which functions to conduct regular checks and repairs of the sewer and storm drainage systems in the territory.

Should there still be a need for water extraction despite these precautions, Birmingham has a lot of companies that can deal precisely with these kinds of situations. These professionals offer a range of services that can be as specialized as sewage cleanup, a branch of restoration that deals with contaminated water. Because not all companies carry the same offerings, a homeowner should check the available services before enlisting a particular professional's services. This is to prevent the stress of finding out that the company is not equipped to deal with a particular home emergency safely and efficiently.

The Birmingham directory offers a wealth of information when it comes to companies capable of dealing with water extraction. A quick run through of the number listed in it will surely yield satisfactory results for those looking for help with flooding or even in the area of sewage cleanup. For those who are more comfortable with technology, the internet also lists restoration companies in Birmingham. Whatever the method used, homeowners should remember that contracting the right kind of company is extremely vital to having the damage of flooding in their properties minimized.

How to Patch Damaged or Rotten Wood

By: Danny Lipford

Rotten door casing and jamb.Rotten door casing and jamb.

You can often repair damaged, nonstructural wood—such as molding, siding, or trim—on your home by filling the damaged area with automotive body filler. Here’s how.

How to repair damaged wood:

Dig out any rotten wood.

Mix up two-part automotive filler.

Fill the void with the filler.

As the filler starts to cure, shape it to conform to the molding.

After the filler hardens, sand it smooth with the surface.

Watch this video to find out more.

We want to hear from you! In addition to posting comments on articles and videos, you can also send your comments and questions to us on our contact page or at (800) 946-4420. While we can't answer them all, we may use your question on our Today's Homeowner radio or TV show, or online at todayshomeowner.com.

Danny Lipford: When you’re dealing with damaged woodwork, the question that always follows is, “Do I repair it or do I replace it?”

The answer can be found in the purpose of the damaged component. If its function is purely aesthetic—like molding, trim, or siding—then it can often be patched.

Automobile body filler is a great choice because this two-part compound dries very hard, very quickly, so you can fill voids and make repairs very easily.

Once it’s dry, it can be sanded just like wood to create a smooth, finished surface.

Helping clients handle disaster-related business losses.

Few calls a CPA receives are more urgent: A client phones to say that last week's torrential rain storms caused flooding, destroying everything in her company's ground floor office. She is out of business. To make an insurance claim, she needs to recreate certain financial records. Can you help?

Your response: "Of course I can help; relax." The client offers her thanks, and as you put down the phone, you begin to review the steps for filing an insurance claim in your head--first, property damage; second, loss of income. This article describes how a CPA can help this client and many other small business clients like her who suffer damage to their businesses due to floods, fires or similar disaster.

PROPERTY DAMAGE: RECORDS RESTORATION

To help the client above make her insurance claim, you check your files to see whether her company had given you all of its property records. A fat file reveals documentation for the last 10 years--more than enough to satisfy most insurers.

What if the client made the mistake of keeping all property records herself?. Hopefully, she also kept a backup copy, or had maintained off-site computer files. If necessary you can obtain copies of the client's business tax returns from the Internal Revenue Service. The returns should show a correct and indisputable property listing on depreciation schedules that can be used in making an insurance claim.

It's important for the client and his or her advisers to remember that damaged property valuation ultimately is subject to the provisions of the client's insurance policy. But the skill with which the client negotiates with his or her insurance company also is important.

BUSINESS INTERRUPTION INSURANCE

A business interruption insurance policy is intended to do for the insured what the business itself would have done had no loss occurred--provide income. A business owner frequently adds such coverage to an existing property policy by endorsement. A typical policy pays a business owner for the actual loss of business income resulting from the necessary suspension of operations while damage is repaired.

DOCUMENTING LOSS OF INCOME

Documenting the income that is lost in a business disaster so a client can make a claim under his or her business interruption insurance policy is more complicated than substantiating a claim for lost property. Four basic factors figure into the loss-of-income equation.

1. Projected net income. How much would the business have earned in the period since the disaster occurred.

2. Operating expenses not incurred. Expenses nullified by the disaster.

3. Income earned since the disaster, if any.

4. Extraordinary expenses incurred as a result of the disaster.

Projected net income. For the CPA to assist the client in projecting how much income the business would have earned, the loss period must be known. The disaster is the first day of this period, which ends when the business is back to normal. Of course, back to normal isn't always easy to calculate. If the client owns a retail business, for example, it may take some time for customers to switch to a new location. Even if a business has not recovered within a policy-specified period of time, the insurer may not be obligated to cover the loss if the policy limits the amount of coverage.

Once the loss period has been estimated, the CPA can calculate projected net income. The starting point is the prior year's tax returns. The CPA should make adjustments for atypical revenue or expenses, as well as any unusual changes in the business (growth, decline, new products, salary level changes). The CPA should be sure to make a list for the insurance adjuster of all the assumptions he or she made in preparing the pro forma financial statements, along with the justification for those adjustments.

Expenses not incurred. The projected net income calculated above is reduced by normal operating expenses that would have been incurred had the disaster not happened. Again, prior-year tax returns are helpful in determining normal operating expenses if, for example, staff members have been laid off as a result of the disaster--thus reducing wage expenses--or a plant stops operating, decreasing utility costs. The CPAs next step is to compare the actual operating expenses (if the business is still partially functional) with normal expenses. The difference would reduce the loss of income claim.

Postdisaster income. Income earned by the business after the disaster reduces the client's loss-of-income claim. To keep track of this, CPAs should impress on their clients the importance of keeping good records.

Extraordinary expenses incurred. Extraordinary expenses incurred by the business as a result of the disaster increase the loss-of-income claim. Clients may incur significant costs while trying to mitigate damages to their businesses. These costs--for renting temporary office space, replacing inventory, using different suppliers or outsourcing certain tasks--reduce the entity's normal profit margin. They may be covered by either the property damage or loss-of-income policy provisions.

TALKING TO THE INSURANCE ADJUSTER

In most cases, the insurance adjuster is more likely to question the loss-of-income claim than he or she is to question the property damage claim. Once the above calculations are completed, CPAs and their clients can expect the adjuster to question projection assumptions. CPAs should be prepared to defend them as reasonable with some form of substantiating evidence, and to have available documentation for significant expenses incurred since the disaster.

One caveat: The CPA should be careful not to include extraordinary costs such as site cleanup or employee overtime in both the property damage and loss-of-income claims. Doing so may cause the adjuster to think the claims have been artificially inflated.

PREVENTING A LOSS

What can a CPA do--before disaster strikes--to make sure his or her clients won't have to scramble to get their business back on track in the event of fire, flood or similar calamity? The checklist on page 41 lists some key questions CPAs should go over regularly with their clients to make sure they are prepared for the worst.

CPAs also can prompt their clients to review their business insurance needs on a regular basis. Having the right business interruption coverage can make the difference between keeping a business alive and forcing it to close its doors forever. Because CPAs typically are very familiar with their clients' business operations, they are in an excellent position to determine what types of insurance are appropriate and how much coverage is necessary.

PEACE OF MIND

For CPAs, helping a client present his or her insurance claims professionally provides that client with peace of mind at a time when it is in very short supply. Even more important, CPAs can offer true peace of mind by assuring clients that the business insurance they maintain is sufficient to protect them from virtually any disaster.

What to Do When a Company Has No Past

What happens when a company has no past history on which to base its loss of income insurance claim? That was the case with a start-up manufacturing company that suffered a fire, delaying the start-up for several months. No tax or previous years' financial information was available for the accountants to use in reconstructing the company's income. Thanks to creative thinking and analysis, the accountants were able to prove that all the fire did was defer catching up to "full speed" and what the company lost were full speed sales. To make the necessary projections the accountants "moved" what actually occurred once the company was in business again back to the date of the fire. Then they took the trend of later sales and used this information to calculate the lost income.

The company was down for three months because of the fire. In the fourth month, it began to operate again and it took five months to reach full production. The insurance company argued that because this was a start-up business, the manufacturer didn't lose as much as it said it did. The accountants proved that what the company effectively lost was four full months of sales because the gear up time was deferred by the fire. It would have finished gearing up during the months it was unable to operate and would already have been fully productive.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

* CPAs CAN HELP BUSINESS CLIENTS FILE insurance claims after their business premises are damaged by fire, flood or other disaster. Claims usually are made in two areas, property damage and loss of income.

* IF RECORDS ARE LOST, CPAs CAN USE tax returns to help reconstruct the list of lost property. Ultimately, damaged property valuation is subject to the provisions of the client's insurance policy.

* DOCUMENTING INCOME LOST BECAUSE of a business disaster involves a computation with four components: projected net income, operating expenses not incurred, income earned since the disaster and extraordinary expenses incurred because of the disaster.

What is vetiver? | Answerbag

Vetiver is a perennial grass indigenous to southeast Asia cultivated in warm regions for its fragrant roots.

Uses

According to Vetiver Network International, a non-profit organization dedicated to the use of vetiver for community improvement and development, vetiver can be used for agricultural purposes (including slope protection, soil erosion and landscaping), handicrafts, community development, the prevention and treatment of contaminated water and land, and disaster mitigation.

Handicrafts

Vetiver may be most well-known for it use in handicrafts. The fragrant roots are dried and then woven into a variety of products, from jewelry to mats, baskets and lampshades. It can also be used in perfumes.

Agricultural Uses

According to VNI, vetiver can reduce soil loss from farmland by as much as 90 percent and rainfall runoff by as much as 70 percent, resulting in crop yields as much as 40 percent higher than without the proper use of the plant. VNI also states it can be used for soil and water conservation, soil moisture improvement, groundwater recharge, soil nutrient recycling, pest control, mulch, forage, cleanup of agricultural contaminated waste water and protection of farm infrastructure (canals, drains, roads, and building sites).

Community Development

Because of vetiver's various uses, inexpensive production and ability to grow in warm climates, vetiver may be especially useful for non-industrialized nations in need of community development. According to VNI, in addition to supplying for marketable handicrafts and its agricultural uses, vetiver can also protect basic infrastructure from damage due to flooding and slippage, clean up polluted sites (trash dumps), treat domestic and animal sewage, provide forage, thatch, mulch, protection against insects and supply rudimentary herbal medicines.

Disaster Mitigation

Because of vetiver root's ability to stabilize land, reduce soil erosion and clean contaminated areas, vetiver has been used for disaster mitigation. Vetiver helped stabilize highways after El Salvador's Hurricane Mitch in 1998, protects a key railway line in Madagascar against annual cyclone damage and helps protect sea dikes in Vietnam against typhoons. Similar uses have been documented in China and Malaysia.

Planet Dishwashing Liquid Reviews: Eco-Friendly & Hypoallergenic

Planet Dishwashing Liquid Review: Hypoallergenic & Scent Free

by Taylor

I'm still trying new dish soaps, and this time I tried Planet dishwashing liquid, which only comes in a scent free and hypoallergenic version.

This brand is advertised as eco-friendly, and made with biodegradable ingredients.

Funny enough, when my husband first used it he said, "I don't like the smell." I responded, "it's scent and dye free, it shouldn't have a smell." He then said, "Oh."

I think he just said it as a knee-jerk response, since he seems to hate the scent of almost any scented dish soap I try, because after I said that he never complained about its scent again.

I found this soap did pretty well on lightly soiled items, although it was a bit on the thin side, which meant I felt like I accidentally squirted more out than I intended a couple of times.

However, it seemed to have a bit more trouble with heavily greasy items, and I had to keep adding more soap to the sponge to make sure I got everything clean.

For those who love scent this is not the soap for you, since the company's whole line of products is scent and dye free, but for those with allergies this might be something right up your alley!

Overall, I would buy this again if there was a coupon and sale, but I think I could find a green dishwashing soap I like a bit better.

Planet Dish Soap Is The One That Cleans & Suds In Hard Water

by Michelle

Michelle says:

We have tried a lot of green and claim to be green but aren't (e.g., Method) dish soaps and just now found one that actually cleans and suds in our hard well water: Planet Ultra dish washing liquid.

It actually works like the un-green stuff and gets a zero or 1 from environmental working group (can't remember right now).

Taylor says:

Thanks for your review. As you can see from my own review above I didn't like it quite as much as you did, but I'm glad it worked for you!

Has anyone else used this or another green dish soap and want to tell me about it? You can submit your own review here or read others already submitted to find one that works well for you, and also is good for the environment.

What To Do During Flood Cleanup Denver by Leo Nov

Denver is always on the list of best places to live in the U.S. particularly if you are raising a family. There's still fresh air, reasonable housing costs and living expenses, complete amenities and tons of choices for recreation. Even music and art aficionados will find this city a sanctuary. However, like many other cities, Denver is subject to disasters like flooding. Should you find yourself in this situation, keep yourself and your family safe first and when the water recedes or has been removed and it is declared safe, then it's time to start with flood cleanup in your Denver home.

You can do the cleanup yourself but not without extreme care. Probably the most important rule during cleanup is to keep safe from electrocution. Everything is wet or damp and you know very well that water and electricity is a deadly combination. If you really need to use electricity, have your connection inspected first by a qualified electrician. Better yet, secure power from an outside source. Also, wear proper gear like gloves, rubber boots and face mask. If your health is already compromised, do not even think about participating in the cleanup. If you have children, elderly or sick household members, relocate them first.

During the cleanup process, use potent but safe cleaning materials. Remember not to mix chemicals because some may be harmful if combined with another chemical. While there are stuff you clean yourself, there are items that should be handled by flood cleanup Denver experts. Examples of these are electrical appliances and heating and cooling system. Unless you are knowledgeable in this field, do not clean and test these items by yourself. Additionally, absorbent materials like fabrics and upholstery is best taken to the cleaners.

An important note on flood cleanup is not to be overly sentimental. It is also not the time to be stingy. Throw what needs to be thrown if it is unsafe. Baby items and food are usually disposed when these come in contact with flood water. Lastly, cleanup should always be completed with disinfection. While the area and items may look squeaky clean to you, germs, bacteria and viruses are invisible.

Gonzalo could still be hurricane strength when it reaches Newfoundland

Gonzalo could still be hurricane strength when it reaches Newfoundland - The Globe and Mail

The Canadian Hurricane Centre is warning that Gonzalo could still be hurricane strength by the time it reaches southeastern Newfoundland early Sunday.

Meteorologist Bob Robichaud said there is about a 30 per cent chance of the storm making landfall on the southern Avalon Peninsula. He said storm could track towards St. Mary's Bay or about 150 kilometres southeast of Cape Race.

Video: Hurricane Gonzalo storms towards Newfoundland

"Right now the storm is still a Category 2, down from a 4 about a day and a half ago, and we expect it to be right around hurricane strength as it passes just off the coast or very near the coast of Newfoundland," said Robichaud from Halifax on Saturday.

Robichaud said winds could gust to 80 kilometres an hour, and hurricane-force wind warnings were in effect for the Grand Banks area.

He said tropical storm and rainfall warnings have been issued, with more than 50 millimetres expected. But Robichaud said those rainfall amounts are not unusual in Newfoundland.

"Generally, we'll see rainfall amounts that they tend to handle quite easily," said Robichaud. "For the most part, this type of wind and rain is not something that is that unusual for Newfoundland."

Robichaud said its the storm surges that could wreak havoc for those living along the south coast.

"This storm is going to be generating some very, very high waves out in the open ocean," he said. "Those waves should approach the southern tip of the Avalon Peninsula during the early morning hours. We could get waves in the five to eight metre range, with potential for the odd one getting up to 10 metres."

The centre said residents in those areas should watch for localized flooding.

Hurricane Gonzalo crushed trees, flattened power lines and damaged Bermuda's main hospital on Friday night, but there were no deaths. Its winds and heavy surf continued to whip at the island Saturday morning as Gonzalo quickly moved northward.

Repair Damaged Artwork Yourself? Maybe Not | Daniel Grant

White bread, raw garlic, onions and potatoes may sound alright if you're hungry, but some people believe that they can clean oil paintings with them. Their reasoning is sound enough: Each of these foods has the right amount of moisture in them to pick up water-soluble dirt without getting the picture wet. However, the foods also leave behind various kinds of bacterial residue, which begin to eat away at both the paint and the canvas.

Another bit of "kitchen chemistry" down the drain. Still, it has its adherents, as do a number of other home-grown ideas about how to care for one's art collection.

Some people believe that, since oil and water don't mix, one may clean an oil painting with soap and warm water. Again, it sounds like it should be okay, but it's not. Soap generally comes in a concentrated form and can damage the paint or diminish the value of the colors. The water will likely squeeze through the cracks, which oil paint inevitably develops, and go all the way back to the canvas. The water then makes the canvas expand, then contract, as it dries, and this process loosens the bond between the paint and the canvas, which may result in the paint flaking off.

One technique that Vincent van Gogh and many other artists have used with their drawings and prints is to pour milk on them. "Milk has casein as its base, which is an adhesive," said Lucy Belloli, a conservator at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. "The milk fixes the ink or pencil on the paper and makes the colors more intense. The only problem with it is that milk becomes brittle in time and the paper, which is more flexible and will expand and contract, might damage the milk coating."

"There's no magic elixir or special potions for taking care of works of art," said Perry Huston, a private art conservator in Houston, Texas. "However, it does take judgement and experience and years of training one's eye. You can't just decide to clean or repair a work of art and think that you don't need any professional help. People like myself are trained for many years to know what to do and how it should be done."

Huston's favorite wive's tale about taking care of pictures is the holes-in-the-backing technique. Many people cut holes into the backings of artworks because they are aware that paintings need to "breathe" -- that is, expand and contract with climatic changes in heat and humidity. However, these holes allow dirt and grime to enter, which the backing is put on to protect against.

"For my money, it's better to keep the dirt out than to worry about whether the painting is 'breathing,'" he said. "All I've ever found that the holes do is let the accumulating dirt breathe."

Cleaning works is where most people get into trouble. Randolph Jones, Jr., a painting restorer in Memphis, Tennessee, noted that some of his clients had attempted to apply cold creme to their works in order to cleanse and moisturize their surface. Not illogically, they attribute a painting's dryness to a lack of moisture, "and they pour oil on it, but all that does is to rot the canvas supports," he said. One cannot remoisturize oil paint.

Other conservators also complained about customers bringing in paintings that had been treated by their owners with linseed oil, poppy seed oil, sesame seed oil, even motor oil -- substances that often stick to the painting and make them almost impossible to clean in the future.

Another seemingly logical but ultimately destructive cleaning method is vacuuming, which will suck dirt from the back of the canvas, but may also make an indentation in the canvas, especially if it is dry. It can also pull off looser bits of paint. Use a feather duster at most, conservators recommend.

People will occasionally attempt to clean photographs with a pencil eraser in order to get dirt off the face of a print -- which has the result of abrading the surface and leaving a permanent mark on it -- or washing it in water. The problem with water is that it may act to wash away some of the stabilizing agents that fix the image and tones of the print. If there is any ink on the back of the photograph, for instance, a rubber stamp or penned notation, that color may be activated by the water and migrate through to the front of the print.

Henry Wilhelm, a photography conservator in Grinnell, Iowa, said that "the best thing to use is Kodak film cleaner and, if that doesn't work, give up. But, really, you're safest by doing nothing or going to a trained conservator. Once you've wrecked a photograph, it's through and can never be restored."

Conservation is a slow, painstaking job of testing and cleaning small areas of a picture at a time. Each color in a painting has a different solubility. Whereas a cleansing may work well on one color, it may completely wip out another, and this is why conservators never work on the surface of a work of art with any tool whose head is larger than a cotton swab. A large part of the conservator's job is testing the surface of the work to determine exactly what is there. They often find overpaint (tourch-ups that some restorer has done) and some form of varnish or other coating, such as polyurethane or shellac, as well as surface dirt and cigarette smoke. All of these elements need to be removed chemically before the work can be cleaned, and the cleaning may involve working separately on different layers of paint, the primer and the canvas itself.

Still, do-it-yourselfers try their hand and at great risk to their valued art possessions. The more knowledgeable of them attempt to use materials that do have a place in art conservation, such as alcohol or bicarbonate or soda, but they do so in such a broad and indiscrimate manner as to damage more areas of the artwork than they conserve.

Some may use solvents that the art conservation field has long since abandoned, such as benzene and carbon tetrachloride, which are proven carcinogens, or caustic soda (otherwise known as lye). Barbara Heller, head of painting conservation at the Detroit Institute of Art, said that caustic soda "cleans great, because it eats through dirt and old varnish, it also eats through everything else. No one can stop it."

Randolph Jones, Jr. noted that one of his clients, who had done some reading in art conservation, concocted her own cleaning solution, using alcohol, mineral spirits and other chemical ingredients, to restore a portrait of one of her ancestors, which had belonged to her family for generations. "It took the varnish off, sure, but it took off everything else, besides. She completely obliterated the face." It was at this point that she brought the portrait to Jones.

"I can work miracles, but I can't restore what I can't see," he said, adding that the client had been searching for old photographs of either the painting or the ancestor for Jones to copy in redoing the portrait.

Those who are less knowledgeable conceive their own ways of unintentionally damaging their artworks. Noting that "people consider objects not as valuable as paintings," Carolyn Rose, director of the Anthropology Conservation Laboratory at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., said that many collectors tend to "treat objects as they do their utilitarian objects at home. For instance, they see a stain on a textile piece and try to get it out in the washing machine. Then, they're all surprised when it comes out all shredded."

She also complained that these collectors will try lemon juice to clean a spot. Because of its high acidity, lemon juice tends to eat through the fabric. They might put baking soda or vinegar on a diamond ring, which will clean it but leave behind a residue that causes corrosion and attracts the glues holding the settings.

If a portion of a sculpture breaks, she said, many people will attempt to repair with with a drug store epoxy or Super-Glue. These generally do hold the work together, but often the adhesive is stronger than the material of the sculpture itself. Just like a painting canvas, a wooden sculpture needs to breathe (expand and contract), but the epoxy won't. This creates tensions elsewhere in the piece and may result in future breaks.

In addition, owners of wood sculptures may look at protect their objects from the elements by coating them with some household wax or varnish. It's a nice idea, but this may act to change the object's color and surface texture as we as create an impermeable moisture barrier that won't allow the work to breath.

The history of conservation is filled with tales of disaster and folly. Up until the middle of the 20th century, restorers regularly repainted sections of the work the Old Masters in order to satisfy the then current notions about what constitutes good taste. It reflected what now seem like rather cavalier attitudes about how artworks should be repaid, the price of which has been the deterioration of many priceless objects. For art buyers, the less restoration that has taken place with a work, the higher the price is likely to be. Conservators are more careful now, not withing to do anything that cannot be undone by the next conservator. Today's horror stories are largely due to art owners who believe that they don't need conservators and can fix very subtle and complex problems by themselves. The more money they try to save, the more they will have to pay later when the work needs to be salvaged.

"Eventually, it all comes back to haunt them when the objects start falling apart," Rose said. "There's no getting away from the kind of care that a conservator can provide."

Earth Day Slogans For Kids

EARTH DAY IS A SPECIAL DAY - There is a special day each year that was established in 1970 by Gaylord Nelson to raise awareness in individuals, communities, towns, governments and countries about the state of our earth.

We have come to realize that our Blue Marble has finite resources. Once human greed and actions of indiscretion removed or destroyed our land, water, and air it would take thousands of years to repair our fragile planet, if ever.

OUR CHANGING WORLD Many had no concept of the untold repercussions upon all living organisms that would result from thinking only of how to take from the earth and not give back or preserve. We are feeling the effects in our escalating human diseases, loss of rain forests that filter our air, changing climates bringing drought, tornadoes, hurricanes, earthquakes or floods. We are observing the rapid extinction of plants and animals both on land and in our oceans.

INCREASED AWARENESS Due to the heightened awareness from past Earth Day Celebrations many have championed for preservation and replenishing our Earth. This year we hope to far surpass the original 20 million people who were involved with that first Earth Day almost 40 years ago. The need is more pressing and urgent. Our landfills are over-burdened and farm animal waste seeps into our water supplies. We scrape coal from the ground and leave eroded denuded rock. We need to find technological methods to secure nuclear waste, stop air pollution and clean up the invisible acid rain that harms every living thing.

LAWS CAN BE ENACTED Countries around the world have created governmental committees and agencies to spearhead environmental clean up and to oversee improved management of natural resources. We should legislate for better programs and ways to protect our earth. The spirit of the day includes binding people together by simply stating the cause through slogans, posting them on banners in public places and using them as public service announcements.

BUILD COMMUNITY AND AWARENESS WITH MOTTOES Slogans solidify the main theme for each year's celebration. You may want to emphasize the grand scheme of things or focus on a particular issue. There may be off-shoots from different organizations as they gather support for their favored area. One group may consider the rivers and streams where their people fish and recreate as the top priority. Others may focus on trees, natural preserves, and all aspects of wood and forests. People living in mountain ranges may emphasize the importance of clean air and fight to prevent acid rain. Villages that live on the coasts want to keep their fisheries alive with clean oceans.

GET INVOLVED BY BRAINSTORMING SLOGANS Suggestions for stimulating discussion, approaching the issue of slogans and having fun at the same time:

1. Meditate on the idea of Earth Day. What does your intuition tell you?

2. Look around and take notice how pollution effects you? What is the most important issue?

3. Read the paper, listen to the radio, or search the latest news online. What current event topic comes up most often?

4. Talk with friends, family, community and congregation members. Get some opinions.

5. Join an environmental group in your region and read their articles.

6. Create a survey.

7. Now that you've got the juices flowing, begin writing the main ideas.

8. Use as many words to describe the themes and then see if any phrases or words cover these ideas.

9. Are they catchy like the hook of a song or the repeating stanzas?

10. Would the phrase fit on a button or shirt?

11. Are the words powerful? Would they motivate others to action?

13. Are the words emotional? Do they touch the heart with meaning?

While we can't answer them all, we may use your question on our Today's Homeowner radio or TV show, or online at todayshomeowner.com.

Jodi Marks: You know, I’m thinking of all the projects that I’ve done, and I’m trying to remember, is there a project where I didn’t use a tape measure? I don’t think so, because this is probably the most popular tool in my tool box.

But, you know, not all tape measures are created equal, and let me show you why. I know you can’t see it, but can you hear that? This is a metal tape, but it’s been coated with nylon. What that does is it makes it more durable, it’s not going to crack like my old metal tape measure does. It actually is going to last up to 10 times longer than a typical metal tape.

Another feature on this is, look, if you’re working by yourself and you’ve got metal studs or you’re working with conduit, it’s got dual magnets on the end. So look, it can hold it in place while I go down the line to get my measurement.

But I have to admit that this is probably the best feature of all, in my opinion. You know how when you extend it out and you lock it into place, and then when you release it, nine times out of 10, it snaps back on your finger? Well, this little bar right here stops that, so when I release it, look. It stops it from smashing your fingers. That right there is worth the price of admission alone.

What is the history of Clarendon, Arkansas?

The area around Clarendon was originally populated by various Native Americans in the United StatesNative American groups. By 1799, French hunters and trappers had built cabins at the mouth of the Cache River (Arkansas)Cache River. It was the point where The Military Road from Memphis, Tennessee to Little Rock crossed the White River (Arkansas)White River. The Military Road was begun in 1826 and completed in 1828. By that date, a ferry crossing and post office had been established in Clarendon, and the town served as the terminus for a stagecoach line to the west. The Military Road was used as the route for some groups of Native Americans in the United StatesNative Americans being relocated from eastern states to Oklahoma during the forced relocations commonly known as the Trail of Tears; Chickasaw, Choctaw, Creek peopleCreek, and Cherokee groups are known to have traveled along it. A railroad bridge across the White River was constructed in 1883; the ferry operated until 1931 when it was replaced by a highway bridge.

The city of Clarendon was officially incorporated in 1859. In 1864, the city was burned to the ground by Union forces in retaliation for the sinking of the tinclad Union gunboat USS Queen City by forces under the command of Confederate Brigadier General Joseph O. Shelby. The town's charter was dissolved in 1884, and it was reincorporated in 1898.

In the early 1900s, Clarendon developed a number of industries, including lumber, staves and barrels, oars, and buttons made from the shells of the area's plentiful freshwater mussels. The mussels also provided freshwater pearls, which were bought and sold at the Clarendon Pearl Market. The Moss Brothers Bat Company supplied baseball bats to a number of major league baseball players during this era.

Like most of eastern Arkansas, Clarendon was devastated by the Great Mississippi Flood of 1927. The main levee at Clarendon held until the White River reached a height of 38.5 feet, 8.5 above normal flood stage; the flood eventually crested at 44 feet. While no fatalities were reported, the town was inundated by water up to the second floor of many buildings, and the catastrophic inrush of water when the levee broke caused considerable damage to many buildings. The cleanup of mud and debris took many years.

The area around Clarendon today is primarily agricultural; tourism related to the area's hunting and fishing resources is the most common non-agricultural economic activity. The reported rediscovery of the ivory-billed woodpecker in 2004-2005 in the Cache River and White River National Wildlife Refuges has brought new attention to the area.

How do I clean up motor oil spilled in the garage?

Kitty Litter

Pour kitty litter over the entire spill, and let it sit for 10-15 minutes before sweeping it up. The litter should soak up most of the liquid, leaving a dry stain on the floor.

Dish Soap

Pour a generous amount of grease-fighting liquid dish soap onto the stain and add enough water to make suds. Scrub the stain with a scrub brush and rinse it with cool water. Repeat the process if the stain remains.

USAF TO SEEK WAIVER ON CLEANUP BASE OFFICIALS SAY WATER TESTS CAN'T MEET STANDARDS.

Byline: Jim Skeen Staff Writer

EDWARDS AIR FORCE BASE - Air Force officials said they would seek waivers from environmental regulators allowing them to halt efforts to clean up contamination on a site in a rocket-engine test area.

The Air Force has removed more than 5,000 pounds of a solvent contaminant from groundwater beneath a former rocket component repair and maintenance shop, but estimates it would take another $40 million to remove what it could. And even then, officials maintain, the water would not meet state cleanup standards.

``It's not a walking-away deal,'' said Gary Hatch, spokesman for the base's environmental management office. ``We will continue to monitor it, and, as new technology comes available, we will look at it.''

The ``technical impracticability'' waiver is being sought from the federal Environmental Protection Agency, and a similar waiver known as a containment zone is being sought from the state, said Bob Wood, director of environmental management for Edwards.

In addition to showing that it is not possible to meet cleanup standards with existing technology, the Air Force will have to show that the contamination does not pose a health threat, Wood said.

``A waiver can't be granted if there's a public health threat,'' Wood said.

The contamination on the south side of Leuhman Ridge at what is commonly referred to as the rocket lab is in groundwater that does not supply the base's drinking water wells, officials said. The rocket lab is about 12 miles from the base's main facilities and six miles from Boron, the nearest civilian community.

The approval of the waivers would be part of the site's ``record of decision,'' a document in which the Air Force and regulators agree on the cleanup strategies for a particular site.

That document would be reviewed every five years to see if there were new technologies that could be applied to the site, Wood said.

The contaminant at the site is perchloroethylene, or PCE, found in solvents that were used at the repair shop. PCE has been shown to cause liver and kidney damage in humans.

PCE has been detected at levels of up to 180,000 parts per billion. The state has set a standard of 5 parts per billion for PCE.

Complicating the cleanup is that the contaminated groundwater is in fractured granitic bedrock, ranging in depth from 30 to 200 feet, Air Force officials said.

The Air Force started cleaning the groundwater in 1999, removing nearly 5,000 pounds of contaminant in the first two years. However, the cleanup is removing decreasing amounts of contaminants, removing roughly 500 pounds in the past year.

``All of our sites primarily have fuel and solvents,'' Hatch said. ``Fuel rises to the top and is fairly easy to remove. The solvents sink to the bottom and are harder to remove.''

Edwards was named as a federal EPA superfund site in the 1990s, and officials said they have spent approximately $200 million since 1980 on environmental investigations and cleanups, removing what officials estimate as 1.8 million pounds of contamination.

The base has also removed more than 500 underground fuel tanks.

I purchased a home & the seller did not disclose flood damage that occurred before I moved in. What can I do?

Did you have a disclosure notice that requested this information? Did you have the home inspected by a professional home inspector? Was it an actual new home, just built? or Are you the second to live there?

If you had a disclosure noticed that asked about flooding and it was not disclosed on there; you have a case for fraud. This is based on you asking about it and being lied to (by not disclosing it, a lie by omission.)

If you had the home inspected the inspector should have seen the damage and reported it. He or she can be sued for the ensuing damages (costs of carpeting, mold and mildew removal etc.)

Finally if it was a new home (just built no prior occupancy) you should have a claim against the builder. He did something wrong that caused the flooding, the odds are if this is so there will be problems again in the future.

After reading this and you can answer yes to any of the 3 questions I started with you have a claim with that respective person(s.)

See a lawyer that specializes in real estate law in your area. Most will give you a free consultation. Bring ALL of your purchase and sales paperwork with you, even the lenders home inspection report.

Solid Advice When It Comes To Plumbing

If you are a homeowner and you have water issues, it can be a very daunting task. A plumbing problem is one of the worst things that can happen to a home. However, there are many ways homeowners can protect themselves from these issues and create plans for minimizing these issues when they do arise.

Noisy pipes are actually a lot easier to fix than you would imagine. Anchor any pipes http://www.eplumbingcourses.com/ that are exposed. For pipes that are http://www.phccweb.org/ situated inside walls, or the floor or ceiling, you should hire a professional.

To prevent your frozen pipes from bursting, leave the nearest faucet on to give the water a way to escape. This reduces pressure to keep the pipe from bursting, which could prevent a big mess in your home.

Have a professional flush your septic tank every five years or so to keep it working well. Doing this prevents any sediment from getting built up within the tank, which causes a backup in your home or causes your entire septic system to fail. Getting your septic tank drained occasionally may be expensive, but it's dirt cheap compared to the cost of repairing a damaged septic system or the cleanup cost when raw sewage backs up into your home.

Don't use harsh chemicals such as toilet tablets in your toilet. While they are good at removing odors, they have a detrimental effect on the parts of the toilet that are rubber. This can make it not function correctly and may even break it.

If your toilet will not flush, and there is very little water in the basin, try to fix the issue by dumping warm water in the bowl from around your waist line. After the water level in the toilet bowl has gone down, you can repeat the procedure until Hospital Water Damage Restoration the blockage Water Damage Experts is cleared.

Becoming educated on plumbing and preparing beforehand can help prevent future issues. Even just learning the basics will go a long way to prevent costly and damaging mistakes. A homeowner who knows something about plumbing can often fix issues before they become major crises.
